Thank you to all who have contributed!

Over the last year and a half we have delivered engagement events on streets, in schools, at youth clubs and community meetings to hear your views on how to make the Deptford Parks Liveable Neighbourhood area ‘healthier’ for the people who live, work and travel through it. We have spoken to as many people as possible during this time, and heard from many more via this commonplace website.

It has been a fascinating journey and we want to thank everyone who has shared their views so far.

What happens next?

We have heard what you have had to say and we have developed proposals to reflect your feedback. We are now publicly consulting on these proposals.

Please follow this link to view these designs and comment. This is a public consultation and will run from November 4th until 3rd January 2020 so please share widely! Please note you will not be able to comment on this commonplace site, only on the LBL website provided.

After consultation

After this consultation closes, a consultation report will be produced, outlining what the London Borough of Lewisham will be pursuing.

This will lead to detailed designs being produced, with the aim to implement these designs towards the end of 2020.

Help us design Woodpecker Road!

Last Friday we installed a new Co-design board along Woodpecker Road!

While the first board aimed to discover issues in the area, this co-design board seeks solutions to these issues, bringing participants further into the design process. We did this by showcasing the main themes that emerged from the first board (play, street furniture, greening of the area, opening the space up and lighting) and provided inspiration / ideas that could be incorporated in the design. We asked people to choose their favourite images and show us whereabouts along the route they would like them.

To celebrate the beginning of the co-design of Woodpecker, we decided to throw a street party! This event invited passers-by to get involved via music, a play street (reimagining the street environment with games, chalk drawings and inviting children to draw their ideas on a map) and an enticing and popular raffle, with an amazing range of gifts, generously provided by local businesses. Lewisham Cyclists also very kindly ran a free Dr Bike, providing numerous bikes some TLC just in time for autumn cycling adventures.

During this event we were very happy to meet a lot of people who contributed to the first board, with many commenting how the board had become a focal point where local people gathered around - in many cases meeting neighbours for the first time!

We went back to Woodpecker on Tuesday and spoke again with all local shops in the central area, hearing some particularly useful insight to how the space works for them.

We really appreciate the contributions so far, and look forward to seeing more ideas for the co-design of Woodpecker Road. The board will be there until Monday so if you haven’t contributed yet head down and tell us your ideas!

Woodpecker engagement events

On Tuesday 30th July Sustrans delivered the first engagement event at Woodpecker Youth Club, where we bought huge maps of the area, art supplies, and local artist Tom Berry to run a fun workshop with local young people. We wanted to hear from them on what they thought about the street environment along Woodpecker Road.

We followed this up with a second workshop on Thursday 8th August, where, via a series of sunny led walk along the street, we encouraged young people to write on the installed board and think about solutions to some of the issues they had raised.

In all of our community engagement projects, we often find that, when it comes to original ideas and creative problem solving, it’s hard to beat speaking to young people.

For example, while talking about improved play provision for younger people along the street Robbie (aged 10) said; ‘Why can’t we design play features for older people too – like my grandad?’ Great ideas like this were popping up throughout the event, making for a fun and exciting few hours along Woodpecker.

After this event, we spent the evening on the street inviting people to write their views on the installed board. It has been brilliant to see so many people contribute in a constructive and thoughtful way to this board, and through this exercise we have gathered a huge amount of information.

We are now really looking forward to the next stage of this project, which will involve accumulating all information gathered so far and breaking it into themes (e.g. lighting, play features etc.) and then using these themes to shape our co-design sessions.

The on-street map will be replaced with a new one, showcasing what people have said so far and asking people what they think solutions to the issued raised should be.

This will be promoted with more events in the area – watch this space to find out when!

In the meantime, you can continue to contribute to the Woodpecker map on Commonplace here .

Next Tuesday's Art Event - Festa Sul Prato from 7-9 pm!

Lewisham based artist, Tom Berry , will be making a series of artworks based around stories of Deptford and New Cross. In particular he is looking for stories based close to (or in) Milton Court Estate, Folkestone Gardens and Deptford Park. The artworks will be installed throughout the project area to form a public art trail.

Come down to Festa Sul Prato, 222 Trundleys Rd, next Tuesday 30th July from 7-9pm to participate in this exciting project. Your stories and memories can help shape art in the travelling landscape of your area.

If you cant make it but would like to share a memory, an interesting fact, or tell the story of how you came to live in this part of London, please share your story here: https://tomberryart.co.uk/deptfordparksarttrail

"Focusing on Woodpecker Road in August"

In the next few weeks we are going to ask your help to shape the plans and designs to improve Woodpecker Road.

The first activity will be on Tuesday 20 July at Woodpecker Youth Club (under 21s only) from 14:30-16:30.

Background:

In the first stage of the consultation last year we received nearly 1,400 contributions in which you indicated issues you encountered in the Deptford area. Your comments on Woodpecker Road included commenting on the dangerous junction with Trundley's Road and the poor condition of the road surface for cyclists and the pavements for pedestrians. Lighting and perceived safety was also an issue.

We excited to say we are able to engage further in this area to ensure all issues are identified and solutions are discussed with residents and people who use this space.

We want to create detailed designs to address these issues and more - and for these designs to work best, we need your input.

Events:

We will be installing a large map (with pens provided) of Woodpecker Road outside the shops and invite you to write your views about the area. Come down and speak your mind anytime!

There will be two maps, the first aims to ‘discover’ the issues and the second seeks to find solutions to them. Each one will be up for around a fortnight, so feel free to make the most of it while it is there.

We will be on Woodpecker Road on August 8th from 4-7 pm to further encourage participation. There will be more events after this - watch this space!
