Scawen Road

Scawen Road used to experience high levels of traffic and collision risks at its junction with Kezia Street. An improvement scheme for Scawen Road was developed as part of the DPLN project. Public consultation on the full scheme for Scawen Road in November/December 2019 revealed 64% in support versus 14% not in support, 13% don’t knows and 8 % no response.

As part of Lewisham's response to the COVID-19 pandemic, a trial closure of Scawen Road (outside Sir Francis Drake Primary School) was implemented in June 2020 using an Experimental Traffic Order (ETO).

The closure was put in place with the aim of achieving the following objectives:

  • Reducing vehicular traffic to make it safer for people to cross the road or step into the carriageway if they need to, to help maintain social distancing;
  • Encouraging walking and cycling trips to local schools;
  • Helping parents and children to maintain social distancing at pick up and drop off times at Sir Francis Drake Primary School;
  • Creating safer walking and cycling conditions in and around green spaces.
  • After further consultation with parents and the wider community, the trial closure is planned to be made permanent.

    If further funding is secured, this may provide the opportunity to bring forward other elements of the original scheme that was consulted upon.
